How to Vet an HVAC Contractor in Ontario

Hiring a heating and cooling contractor is one of the larger home decisions you will make. This checklist covers what to verify before you sign, written for Ontario homeowners.

1. Confirm TSSA authorization

In Ontario, any gas or fuel-burning appliance work must be performed by a TSSA-authorized fuels contractor using a certified technician. Ask for the contractor's authorization and verify it on the TSSA public listing before any furnace or gas line work.

2. Check insurance and WSIB coverage

A legitimate contractor carries liability insurance and WSIB coverage for their technicians. Ask for proof. If a worker is injured on your property and the contractor is uninsured, you can be exposed.

3. Get itemized written quotes from at least three contractors

Compare equipment make and model, labour, permits, and warranty in writing. A quote that is dramatically lower than the others usually means a smaller unit, a shorter warranty, or excluded permit costs.

4. Ask about the equipment warranty and the labour warranty

Manufacturer parts warranties and contractor labour warranties are separate. Confirm both in writing, and confirm that registering the equipment is handled so the full warranty term applies.

5. Confirm permits and inspection

Furnace and air-conditioner installations often require a permit and an inspection. A contractor who skips the permit is a red flag and can complicate future home sales or insurance claims.

6. Read recent reviews and ask for local references

Look for a pattern of recent reviews in your own city, not a single five-star burst. Ask for two recent local references doing a job similar to yours.
